I also found running around and using "whereis player" helps a lot too. One useful function would be a way to report distance between a character and an object, esp for writing things like 'overhear' dialogues. It's a lot of trial and error currently.

"values player list" or in general "values CHARACTERNAME list" will show that. It won't show distance between objects, but if you plant yourself on top of an object (or as close as you can get) and then check your own values, you'll see the distance to other characters. Should give you a good estimation, within .2 to .5 units or so.
