Search for each underlined section name (such as T4) to go directly to it:
  • T1: Camera Item is not Taking Pictures or Game Crashes when Taking Pictures
  • T2: Stories fail to unzip, "Latest Story File not Found" or "Error Writing Story Files to your Documents Folder" (Red Error Texts near “Start New Game”) and/or Characters/Items Disappear or Freeze
  • T3: Cannot Download Stories from Server/Network Error (Red Error Text near “Start New Game”)
  • T4: Failed to Download or Start the Game, or Game Crashes
  • T5: Troubleshooting Performance Issues (Stutter/”Lag”/FPS) and Mouse Look Problems
Please read the information below and thoroughly attempt all listed troubleshooting steps prior to creating a post for your issue. This will allow our small team to focus on QA testing problems that are actually within our power to fix, give us more time to work on content and features, minimize duplicate discussion posts, and in general improve the House Party experience for everyone.

In all examples below, replace “C:” as needed with the drive containing your Windows or Steam installation and related files. If you're using a standalone .exe, you will need to know where you have put the HouseParty.exe file and the accompanying Data folder. If you've customized any of the specific folder locations/settings, use the locations specific to your system. You may need to search your PC if you have forgotten said locations or customized your installation.

“Security Software” when used below refers to anti-virus, network security, anti-spyware/malware, anti-ransomware, or other software used to protect your computer.Eek! Staff will not be guiding you through the changing of settings in your Security Software. Please refer to your Security Software’s online documentation or other users for this. Never fully disable your Security Software. Please be aware that many security programs are made up of multiple ‘components’ or ‘modules’, meaning that are both anti-virus AND anti-ransomware, etc., and each of these may need to be tweaked in order to allow the game to function properly.

NOTE: There is no reason for the user to ever make any changes, deletions, or add anything in the following two directories. Doing so will likely corrupt your game data, requiring a full uninstall, verification that all House Party related files are deleted, and then a fresh install.

C:\Users\YOUR-USERNAME-HERE\AppData\LocalLow\Eek\House Party
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\House Party\HouseParty_Data

T1: Camera Item is not Taking Pictures or Game Crashes when Taking Pictures

The camera item actually saves pictures to the following directory, and therefore your user account and the House Party game itself need access to it:

C:\Users\YOUR-USERNAME-HERE\Documents\Eek\House Party\Photos

Relevant articles and troubleshooting steps:

Malware, Viruses Interfering With Steam
Programs Which May Interfere With Steam
  • Your PC is running Security Software (anti-virus, anti-ransomware, etc.) that is preventing House Party from accessing the \Photos folder mentioned above. An exception needs to be added in your Security Software for the entire Documents\Eek folder and its subfolders (including \Photos), and a process exception needs to be added for HouseParty.exe.
  • Your user account does not have read/write access to the \Photos folder. Make sure none of the Documents\Eek folders or files are set to "Read Only". You may need to log onto an administrator account to play, use administrator credentials to give yourself access to the \Photos folder, or you can run the game .exe directly as an administrator (right click the file and “Run as Administrator”). You can find this file (for Steam users) at the following location, UNLESS you are using a custom installation folder:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\House Party

If you are NOT a Steam user, try searching your computer for 'HouseParty.exe' and then running that as an administrator instead.
  • Copy all of the files from the game installation folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\House Party) to your Desktop and try running the HouseParty.exe file from there.
  • If you were running in fullscreen mode, try running the game in windowed mode.
  • Something has happened with your installation of the game. Try a complete reinstallation, INCLUDING deleting the files and folders in your C:\Users\YOUR-USERNAME-HERE\Documents\Eek directory.
T2: Stories fail to unzip, "Latest Story File not Found" or "Error Writing Story Files to your Documents Folder" (Red Error Texts near “Start New Game”) and/or Characters/Items Disappear or Freeze

The unzip function within the House Party program needs to be able to successfully access, read from, write, and extract our story package to the following folder:

C:\Users\YOUR-USERNAME-HERE\Documents\Eek\House Party\Mods\Stories

Otherwise, we now bundle stories in with our game data, generally located within the install/Steam Library or Apps directory, under \House Party\HouseParty_Data\StreamingAssets. It is completely normal for this folder to contain a .zip file inside that does not appear to be extracted. You will never need to do anything with this folder or these files.

Relevant articles and troubleshooting steps:

Malware, Viruses Interfering With Steam
Programs Which May Interfere With Steam
  • Your PC is running Security Software (anti-virus, anti-ransomware, etc.) that is interfering with access to the Documents\Eek folder, subfolders and/or files in some way. Or, it is preventing the HouseParty.exe process from performing an archive unzip of the story files. An exception needs to be added in your Security Software for the entire Documents\Eek folder and its subfolders, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\House Party and its subfolders, and a process exception needs to be added for HouseParty.exe.
  • Your Documents\Eek\House Party\Mods\Stories folder is either exceptionally full of story and character files that aren't organized just into simple folders (i.e. you have .rars, .zips, .story, .character files ALL in the \Stories folder), or you have files/folders in the \Stories folder that are using non-alphanumeric and/or non-Latin character sets. Your \Stories folder should ONLY be a collection of folders such as "Original Story", "Tutorial", "Hypno House", etc. There should be NO .character or .story or .zip files in the folder. So if yours looks like this:

    https://imgur.com/9YMDKI2

Make it look more like this:

    https://imgur.com/ldy8GeQ
  • We have seen a few rare issues when Microsoft Windows components are corrupted or very old. Please follow Microsoft guidelines for reinstalling/updating Microsoft Visual C++ and .NET components (you can find these listed in your "Programs"/"Programs and Features" page in Windows, via search or the Control Panel).
  • You tried to install a custom story and somehow overwrote other story content, put the custom stories in a core game file folder (where HouseParty.exe is located), or somehow in the process corrupted the story you are currently trying to play.
  • Your user account does not have read/write access to the \Stories folder. Make sure none of the Documents\Eek folders or files are set to "Read Only". You may need to log onto an administrator account to play, use administrator credentials to give yourself access to the \Stories folder, or you can run the game .exe directly as an administrator (right click the file and “Run as Administrator”).

  • The game sometimes has difficulty reading from \Documents folders that have had their default linkage/location changed. If your \Documents folder is not at the default location (Users\YOUR USER NAME\Documents), or is being sync'd to a network drive or OneDrive-type cloud system, try restoring the \Documents location to its defaults or creating the folder structure yourself to see if the issue is resolved.
  • If you obtained the game via a .zip file, make sure you unzip the downloaded file PRIOR to attempting to run the game.
  • If ever in doubt, here is a direct link to the story downloads. The latest story download will always be *generally* at this link, you just need to change the numerical values (i.e. 0.x.x to 0.6.6, 0.7.3, etc.) to match the latest version of the game build we have released:

    http://games.eekllc.com/Download/stories/Mods.0.9.6.zip

You can use your own unzip program (WinRar, WinZip, 7-zip, etc.) to extract the .story and .character files and then just use these to overwrite the existing files in your Documents\Eek\House Party\Mods\Stories\Original Story folder.
T3: Cannot Download Stories from Server/Network Error (Red Error Text near “Start New Game”)

The Eek! server that hosts the stories is either down, or your PC or some software on it (Security Software, Windows Firewall, etc.) is preventing access to our server where the stories are kept. You may also have configuration settings on your router that prevent access to our server, or your ISP or government is preventing access.

Relevant articles and troubleshooting steps:

Using a Firewall With Steam
Malware, Viruses Interfering With Steam
  • You need to allow the HouseParty.exe process full inbound communication to the internet for story downloads, and your PC/Security Software (anti-virus, anti-ransomware, firewall/network security, etc.) needs to allow full inbound access to http://games.eekllc.com
  • You will need to use a VPN to access http://games.eekllc.com
  • If ever in doubt, here is a direct link to the story downloads. The latest story download will always be *generally* at this link, you just need to change the numerical values (i.e. 0.x.x to 0.6.6, 0.7.3, etc.) to match the latest version of the game build we have released:

You can use your own unzip program (WinRar, WinZip, 7-zip, etc.) to extract the .story and .character files and then just use these to overwrite the existing files in your Documents\Eek\House Party\Mods\Stories\Original Story folder.
T4: Failed to Download or Start the Game, or Game Crashes

See the following link:
Failed to Download or Start Game (Missing Executable)
  • Some Security Software (anti-virus, anti-ransomware, etc.) has been known to prevent HouseParty.exe from running at all. Ensure that you add exceptions/exclusions into your Security Software for your House Party folders (Steam installation directory, C:\...Documents\Eek, and one for HouseParty.exe itself)
  • Update your system and graphics drivers
  • Verify game file integrity via the Steam interface and/or reinstall the game
  • Disable desktop resizing, custom aspect ratios or set your aspect ratio to default, disable custom display scaling preferences and any resolution or scaling “override” settings, and reset or delete House Party-specific profile(s) within your graphics card's control panel
  • Fully disable “Virtual Super Resolution” (AMD/Radeon GPUs) or Dynamic Super Resolution (NVIDIA GPUs) in your graphics card’s control panel
  • Verify that Microsoft .NET and Visual C redistributable/components are properly installed on your PC
  • Disable any applications running overlays or any other function that takes control of fullscreen windows
  • Turn off/disable all non-critical, non-Microsoft applications
  • Also try other steps from 2nd and 3rd troubleshooting sections as sometimes the same underlying cause presents different symptoms for different users
  • Verify that your PC meets or exceeds ALL of our minimum system requirements. These can be found on our website (http://games.eekllc.com/house-party-sys ... uirements/) or linked to from the site you used to purchase the game
T5: Troubleshooting Performance Issues (Stutter/”Lag”/FPS) and Mouse Look Problems

Thus far we've found that mouse look issues are most often tied to low frame rates; either at seemingly random moments or if your frame rate is consistently low or "spiky". However, this may not always be the case, so please take care to review and step through the following troubleshooting actions to try and fully resolve the problem. Following these steps and giving feedback will also help us in further optimizing the game and improving the House Party experience for everyone!
  • Ensure that House Party is the only program running; close non-critical background programs
  • Try reducing the graphics setting from Fantastic or Good down to Simple when starting the game.
  • In the in-game graphics menu (main menu, or hit ESC while playing), turn off AA (Anti-Aliasing), Realtime Lighting, and Realtime Shadows
  • In that same graphics menu, make sure the FPS limit slider is all the way to the right (300).
  • Ensure that your dedicated GPU (NVIDIA or Radeon/AMD, if available) is set as the active GPU for running House Party. For troubleshooting purposes you can attempt to run on integrated graphics if you suspect a failing GPU. For more info click here: https://forum.eekllc.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1489
  • Make sure your GPU drivers are updated
  • Make sure your monitor is plugged into the video ports for your dedicated GPU in the back of your computer, not the video port that may be integrated into your motherboard
  • Turn off 'force Vsync/adaptive sync' on your GPU (check program-specific settings too, not just the general GPU profile/settings!)
  • Turn off G-SYNC or FreeSync on your GPU (check program-specific settings too, not just the general GPU profile/settings!)
  • Fully disable “Virtual Super Resolution” (AMD/Radeon GPUs) or Dynamic Super Resolution (NVIDIA GPUs) in your graphics card’s control panel
  • Try switching between windows and full screen mode when starting the game
  • Disable the Steam overlay, and any streaming/recording, XBOX, or other DVR apps are off
  • Make sure your GPU is configured for maximum performance mode as part of your power settings in your GPU Control panel
  • Set your PC's power plan/power profile in Windows to High Performance, NOT Battery Saver, etc.
  • Try running the game at your monitor's native resolution, and then alternatively at lower resolutions, as well as the highest resolution it can support
  • Try alt-tabbing out and then back into the game
  • Using a native DPI setting on your mouse if it has adjustable DPI (this will differ from model to model; try 400, 800, 1200, and/or 1600 DPI)
  • Make sure Windows mouse sensitivity is low (or at a setting that feels smooth to you), and that the options for acceleration or "enhance pointer precision" are off
  • Verify that no mouse software (Logitech, Razer, etc.) is adding acceleration or a custom sensitivity profile to House Party
  • Check device manager to make sure your system USB and mouse drivers are installed, updated, and working properly, and that no additional/unnecessary/old hardware drivers for mice or other similar devices are installed
  • If you have extra input devices installed beyond a mouse and keyboard, like a racing wheel, stylus, etc. try disconnecting it
  • Verify that your PC meets or exceeds ALL of our minimum system requirements. These can be found on our website (http://games.eekllc.com/house-party-sys ... uirements/) or linked to from the site you used to purchase the game
  • Finally try forcing the game to run in DirectX 9:

Right Click on House Party in your Library
    Choose "Properties"
    Click "Set Launch Options"
Paste into text box "-force-d3d9" without the quotes
    Click "OK"
    Click "Close"
